A 17-year old girl has died after setting herself ablaze at the Teshie police barracks in Accra. Esi Aboagyewaa decided to end her life by pouring kerosene and lighting herself up. She was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment but passed away Thursday. The reasons for her actions are unknown. Detective Gann Damnang told Myjoyonline.com, Esi has a history of attempted suicide. Two years ago, the deceased attempted to stab herself with a knife but was rescued. Joy News’s Anna Agyepong spoke to Esi’s best friend and neighbour, who gave a chilling account of the incident. She said she was in the kitchen when she heard mournful groans and dashed out only to find her friend enveloped by fire and reeling on the ground. “I shouted from the balcony and ran down, calling people to come and rescue the girl,” Esi’s friend recalled. She said the deceased never said anything about maltreatment that could drive her to such an extreme end. The police have begun investigations into the matter. Teshie District Commander, DSP Samuel Tibil Punobyin said when the police responded to the distress call, they found the deceased badly burnt. They rushed her to the hospital where she later died. Esi Aboagyewaa until her death was a quiet and an isolated house help who stayed with Chief Inspector Comfort at the Teshie Police barracks where the incident took place. Source: Joy News/Ghana
