The Executive Director of the Narcotic Control Board (NACOB) has confirmed the absence of NACOB officials at the VVIP lounge of the Kotoka International Airport but says there is no cause for alarm. Newspapers reported the absence of the NACOB officials at the lounge, expressing fears the situation could lead to an increase in drugs smuggling. Already whistle-blowing website, Wikileaks, has reported of suspected abuse of the lounge even in the presence of the NACOB officials with increasing fears the lounge could be used as a passage way for drug couriers. But the Executive Director of NACOB, Yaw Akrasi Sarpong told Joy News his outfit has had to re-strategize. He argued that intelligence available to NACOB indicates that dealers have shifted attention to the borders and NACOB has to review its strategies. He however noted there is security architecture at the airport which provides adequate intelligence information about drug related issues. He said he is prepared to take responsibility if it can be proven that the lounge has been turned into a drug transit point in the absence of NACOB. “We are satisfied with the security architecture that has been put in place there. We are satisfied, whether or not they are capable of detecting drugs or not is neither here nor there.” “…We need not be at the VVIP lounge at this time. The matter will be reviewed continuously,” he said. But Dr. Kwesi Annin, security analyst at the Kofi Annan Peace Keeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) said NACOB must be cautious. He was worried that the categories of people who were named in the wikileaks reports as abusing the VVIP lounge are still using the place. He also said the information about drug lords using the borders is nothing new, explaining that drug peddlers have always been known to be using the country’s borders.
