An Accra Circuit Court on Thursday remanded a 42-year-old cleaner into police custody for causing damage to the left eye of his wife over non-payment of their children’s school fees.
Emmanuel Armah Amartey’s plea was not taken pending further investigations into the matter.
The court remanded him into police custody to reappear on February 2.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarah Acquah, the complainant, Lydia Adei Kortey, and the accused person had two children but they were separated. She said on January 22, Lydia went to Amartey to demand the children’s school fees from him. He asked her to go back home with a promise that he would bring the money.
Lydia went back to Amartey a few days later when he failed to bring the money as he promised.
Amartey again asked Lydia to go back home with another promise that he would bring the money the next day, but she refused.
ASP Acquah said Amartey became offended, picked a stick and subjected her to severe beatings causing damage to her left eye.
She said Lydia’s screaming drew the attention of neighbours who came to her rescue.Source: GNA
