The government of Ghana says it is not in a hurry to evacuate its citizens from the troubled North African country of Egypt. Mass protests to oust Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak have entered its seventh day, leaving hundreds of people dead and properties destroyed. The protesters are in no mood for compromise and have vowed to remove from office the 82 year-old leader who has been in power for 30 years. Some countries have already evacuated their citizens from Egypt, fearing the situation could degenerate. But Ghana’s Deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa maintains Ghanaians are safe, at least for the time being. “Our mission in Egypt informs us that our compatriots living in Egypt are doing very well. You will observe that we have not been targeted as a country, and our mission has been operating. "Protesters have not come close to it. So we are maintaining up-to-the-minute close monitoring of the situation,” he told Joy News’ Araba Koomson. Mr Ablakwa added: “for now we do not think there is the need to evacuate our compatriots in Cairo or any part of Egypt.” Play the attached audio for excerpts of the interview.
