The National Census Secretariat has admitted last year’s census exercise faced serious problems but insists the data gathered is credible enough to rely on for planning purposes.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Head of Publicity and Education Unit at National Census Secretariat, David Kombat, pointed to problems such as the lack of logistics, the uncooperative attitude of some communities and the deserting of posts by some enumerators as accounting for the problems faced by the Secretariat.
“We had initial problems of logistics which were resolved; there were problems of some enumerators deserting the work in the course of the exercise...there were issues of some communities refusing to respond because they said they belonged to one district or the other.
“But we are going to come out with very credible data for planning,” he assured.
The Census official also indicated that the provisional results which were due to be announced on Monday did not materialise because of a technical hitch and not because they did not have a comprehensive report of the results as an official of the Secretariat told Joy FM.
He was however confident that the anomaly would be rectified soon and assured the preliminary census will be announced.
Concerning complaints of nonpayment of allowances to enumerators, Mr Kombat explained that some were not paid due to shoddy work done and that all enumerators in the Upper East and Upper West regions had been paid fully since they had fulfilled their part of the contract.
