Commercial and other economic activities had resumed in the Agona Swedru Municipality following the restoration of the bridge on River Akora. The bridge collapsed on June 20, 2010 following a heavy down pour that destroyed property and rendered about 14,234 people homeless. A survey conducted by the Ghana News Agency in the Agona Swedru Municipality on Wednesday revealed that most of the stores, shops and markets that were empty after the disaster had resumed brisk business. Some storekeepers, market women and drug store operators who became idle during the disaster period are now busy serving their customers. Most of the customers told the GNA that their daily sales had improved considerably. Commercial drivers to and from Agona Swedru who were unable to operate are back in brisk business and this had made it possible for them to pay tolls to the Agona West Municipal Assembly. However, there was traffic congestion at the business area of the Municipality, compelling some commuters to walk from Swedru Texaco to Chapel Square instead of spending one-and-half hours in traffic for the two-and-half-kilometre journey. Work on another bridge at the By-pass road is progressing steadily, Mr Michael Azu, Project Manager of the construction company, told the GNA that they are expected to complete it by the end of February.Source: GNA
