Some areas in the national capital have been flooded after the city’s first heavy downpour of the year.
Affected residents say the situation may be a sign that flood control measures reportedly adopted by city authorities are inadequate.
Nana Yaa Fynn-Thompson visited some of the flooded areas and reports several homes have been hit.
“Though it did not rain heavily, rain water entered several homes here. We believe that when the gutters are constructed this problem will stop; we plead with our authorities to construct our gutters and also fix our roads,” one affected resident said.
Nana Yaa reports some parts of Abossey Okai, Sukura, both suburbs of Accra, were also flooded.
“Some gutters were choked with refuse and in some places heaps of garbage were waiting to be washed into the gutters by the next rainfall.
Meanwhile mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Alfred Vanderpuije, has blamed the flooding on poor citing of some buildings.
“We also recognize that there are constructional activities that need to be done to direct the water to make sure that they get into the appropriate drains,” Dr Vanderpuije said.
