Government is intent on clamping down on employers who fail to comply with the new minimum wage, Deputy Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, Antwi-Boasiako Sekyere has said.The National Tripartite Committee has pegged the new minimum wage at GH¢3.73 from the previous GH¢3.11 representing 20 per cent upward adjustment.Often times, some employees do not pay their workers as required by the law but this, Mr Antwi-Boasiako assures would be a thing of the past.In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem Tuesday, he said government’s labour inspectors in collaboration with organised labour would form a taskforce that would pay regular visits to companies to ascertain their pay structure.He conceded that government has not done well over the years to check employers, who although are aware of the country’s minimum wage, deliberately disregard that and pay their employees pittance.He cautioned those paying below the minimum wage to stop that practice with immediate effect for their own good as the government would henceforth walk its talk to take them to task.Investors whose main objective is to make money are often the major culprits, but Mr Antwi-Boasiako warned that even though they (investors) are welcome to do business in Ghana, turning workers into “servants” would not be entertained.He also warned Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as private security companies who have engaged the services of people and are paying them below the minimum wage to desist from the act.Story by Isaac Essel/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
