The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU)of the Ghana Police Service says close to 200 people died from road accidents in January in of 2011.
Head of Education Research and Training at MTTU, ASP Alexander Kwaku Obeng told Adom News the 194 people died between 1st and 31st January, 2011.
He said the figure represents a 70% increase in the number of deaths compared to the same period last year.
Out of this year’s figure, 56 of the dead were children under 18 years old.
He said more than half of the accidents that occurred involved commercial vehicles with many children at risk because they have little or no idea of how to handle themselves.
In the light of the staggering figures, ASP Obeng said the MTTU is putting in measures to help quell accidents on the roads.
He encouraged drivers to renew their licenses and ensure that their vehicles are road worthy before setting out to their various destinations to avoid preventable accidents.
