Participants at a water forum in the Upper West regional capital Wa have expressed worry about the indiscriminate drilling of boreholes in the region.
They say some of the boreholes are sited at places with poor sanitation with adverse health implications for the people who drink from them.
They are asking the Ministry for Water Resources, Works and Housing to take a critical look at the situation to prevent the outbreak of disease.
Joy FM’s Upper West Regional Correspondent Rafik Salaam reports the Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, Mr Alban Sumana Bagbin assured the issue will be looked into by the Ghana Water Company.
“The Ghana Water Company will be called upon to take a census of all water producers and investigate their sources of water and see whether they comply with our guidelines,” Mr Bagbin said.
The minister also expressed concern about the refusal of residents of some communities to pay for water provided them under the Small Town Water System.
He reminded residents that it was better for them to contribute to the maintenance of the water system than resort to drinking contaminated water when the system breaks down and going to the hospital to pay more money.
