The Ankobiahene of the Dormaa Traditional Area in the Brong Ahenfo region, Nana Kwame Asante has denied media reports that he has been busted by drug enforcement agencies in the United States of America for drug trafficking. Nana Kwame Asante whose name has been linked to the recent arrest of a drug trafficker in the US told Adom FM’s Frimpong Manso-Adakabre he has no connections with the man arrested and that he is surprised at the reports. He said the report has damaged the reputation of Dormaa Ahenkro and that the traditional council is preparing to meet on the matter. The Daily Graphic reported in its Wednesday, February 23, 2011 edition that, “The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) of the United States of America has arrested Nana Kwame Asante who claimed to be a traditional ruler from Dormaa Ahenkro in the Brong Abafo Region for allegedly possessing 1.5 kilogrammes of heroin. The chief, 59, was arrested at the JFK International Airport inn New York: shortly on arrival there on February 12, 2011. According to a source at the Narcotics Control. Board (NACOB) in Accra, available records indicated that the suspect began his journey in Cote d'lvoire and transited in Casablanca, Morocco, before finally arriving at JFK. It said Nana Asante was accosted by DEA officials on suspicion that he was carrying drugs as he went through arrival formalities at the airport. During a search, a substance which proved to be heroin and weighing 1.5 kilogrammes was found on him. The suspect has been held by the US authorities and is being processed for court in New York. According to the source, due to the preventive measures put in place by NACOB at the Kotoka International Airport, the suspect decided to travel through Cote d'lvoire in order to evade possible arrest. It said information gathered from the US Embassy in Accra indicated that the suspect had applied for a non-immigrant visa to enable him to attend an event at Lawrenceville, Georgia, to raise funds for development projects in his town Ankobia. He had given his date of birth July 1, 1952, place of birth as Dormaa Ahenkro in the Brong Ahafo Region and claimed that he was a traditional ruler in the Ankobia Traditional Area at Dormaa. The suspect also claimed to be a member of the Ankobia Traditional Council and gave the name of his wife as Rosemond Opare.” But the chief insists he has been brutally impersonated.
