The Ghana Refugees Board, UNHCR and government officials will meet by the end of March, to decide on the fate of the more than Eleven thousand (11,000) Liberian refugees living in Ghana. The Project Coordinator of the Refugee Board Mr. Paddy Tetteh disclosed to Adom News on Wednesday, after a tripartite committee meeting. The continuous stay of the refugees in the country has in recent times become a source of worry to many, especially after recent clashes which led to the death of one person. Since then, there has been several meetings aimed at resolving the matter. According to Mr. Tetteh, the refugees cannot stay in Ghana forever and therefore the need to find an amicable way to resolve the matter. “We will finalize their stay in our (tripartite) meeting which will be held on a date in the fourth week in March, because we all believe no one can be a refugee all his life, some have been here for more than 20 years” he said. In 2008 the UNHCR repatriated several of the refugees back to Liberia but those currently living in Ghana refused to go back claiming they had nowhere to go. Mr. Tetteh is optimistic that many will be sent home while others who have married will be allowed to settle in Ghana with their new families. “Some will be sent back to Liberia, some will be reincorporated in Ghana because some have married but the issue is they will not be at the refugee camp” he said.
