The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) on Wednesday commended Mr Anas Aremeyaw Anas, an Investigative Journalist and the New Crusading Guide Newspaper for their contribution in the fight against corruption in the country. The massive exposition of corrupt practices and abuses in the cocoa industry, the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Osu Children's Home and lately the Tema Port must be appreciated, Mr Richard Quayson, Deputy Director of the Commission said. He was addressing participants at the Brong-Ahafo Regional Consultative Workshop on the National Anti-corruption Action Plan in Sunyani. Mr Quayson said corruption was a threat to moral, political, economic and social well-being of Ghanaians and efforts should be made by all and sundry to clamp down on the menace. "We are faced with a situation where corruption is increasingly becoming the norm of the day and we seem to be far from winning the fight against it," he stated. Mr Quayson observed that the country had failed to fight corruption because of inadequate political commitment and it behoved on the citizenry to contribute their quota. He said the media played a critical role in fighting corruption and appealed to practitioners to work hard in holding duty bearers accountable. Mr Eric Opoku, Deputy Regional Minister, noted that award creation and public participation could also help to curb corruption. He said the government, recognising the destructive effect of corruption in the achievement of the "better Ghana agenda," would do everything possible to support efforts at curbing the menace. "Corruption if not checked has the tendency to erode the fundamental of Ghana's democratic principles, undermine the rule of law, transparency and democratic accountability," Mr Opoku stated.
