The dream of 84 mentally handicapped children in and around the North Tongu District of the Volta Region of going to school is in danger as the only special school in the area says it does not have enough space for new admissions. Authorities of the Three Kings Special School for the Mentally Handicapped and Blind Children at Battor in the North Tongu District say their facilities have been over stretched to the extent that, it has become impossible to admit new pupils. Headteacher of the Three Kings Special School for the Mentally Handicapped and Blind Children, Martin Goza disclosed to Adom News in an interview that, unless ongoing expansion projects which have been delayed unduly, are completed, the 84 will continue to be on the waiting list. Mr. Goza lamented that the expansion project which was supposed to be completed in 10 months after it was awarded on contract in 2008, is yet to be completed. “We currently have 91 inmates here and each of them needs special attention since they all have special cases. We cannot admit new pupils when we know they can’t get the care they need. Our facility at Adidome which is the district capital is where the visually impaired kids are housed but the one at Battor cannot accept new intakes”, Mr. Goza, obviously disappointed, told Adom News’ Jerry Tsatro Mordy on Thursday. Mr. Goza suspected the contractor on the project might have abandoned it due to lack of cash from the Assembly, forcing the school authorities to put those kids on the waiting list for about three years. Meanwhile the District Chief Executive for North Tongu, Dzinedu Bubey has assured that the Assembly will ensure the projects are completed soon to enable the school open its doors to the 84 pupils. Mr. Bubey said the delay was the result of lack of funding for the project. He said his outfit will, as a matter of urgency, arrange a meeting between the school authorities and the Assembly to find solutions to the challenges facing the school. In a related development, Miss Claricer Numekor Acolatse, a staff at the Communications Directorate at the Office of the President, Castle, Osu, has donated assorted items inmates of the school. The items which included 15 bags of rice, 15 bags of maize, 8 bags of sugar, 15 bundles of used clothing, plastic bowls and buckets as well as soft drinks were personally presented to the school as part of activities to mark her birthday. Miss Acolatse interacted with the children who were highly elated at the present. Story: Jerry Tsatro Mordy/Adom News
