Popular television star, Shaka Zulu, who was arrested by the police for an alleged armed robbery operation has formally been charged before the court with three accomplices, seven months after his arrest.
The 30-year-old, whose real name is Richard Cobbina, was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command on August 18, last year, and placed in police custody until Monday, when he made his first appearance in the High court, in Accra.
Shaka Zulu and his accomplices, Wise Grey, Abbas Baba and Paul Owusu were charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit crime and robbery. They pleaded not guilty.
State Prosecutor, John Tulasi Ofori, told the court presided over by Justice Charles Quist, that the complainant, a Nigerian businessman, was out of the jurisdiction and the prosecution needed time to contact him for hearing to begin. The court, therefore, remanded the accused persons and adjourned the case to March 28.
Shaka Zulu, Grey and Owusu appeared without counsel. But lawyers for Baba told the court that because of the delay in charging their client, they had filed an application for bail which was yet to be heard.
The prosecution said the four accused persons acted together to rob a Nigerian businessman and his colleagues at their residence at Batsona and made away with five laptop computers, a wrist watch valued at GH¢200 and cash of GH¢150,000.
According to the prosecution, during the operation, Owusu took the complainant’s car keys and attempted to start the car but he had to abandon it when the alarm in the car sounded.
The accused persons bolted but the complainant and his colleagues pursued them and arrested Owusu but Shaka Zulu, Grey and Abbas escaped in a taxi but Owusu later led the police to arrest Shaka Zulu and Grey. Abbas was on July 11, 2010, arrested in another robbery operation at Dansoman and he confessed to participating in a number of armed robberies in the metropolis including the Batsona one.
