An articulated oil tanker with registration number WR 906 V, last Friday crashed into the Beposo toll booth, making it the second time in thirteen months the booth had been crashed into. However, there was no casualty reported in the accident. In the first accident that occurred on February 13, 2010, two workers who were on duty inside the booth lost their lives. The Western Regional Director of the Roads and Highways, Mr Joseph Kodwo Nsia told the GNA in Takoradi that the oil tanker, which was carrying oil palm, lost control over its breaks about 50 metres ahead of the toll booth. Luckily, he said, the danger alarm bell in the toll booth sounded, which prompted the workers in there to escape before the vehicle crashed it, destroying the booth in the process. In view of this, Mr Nsia has indicated that the toll booth would be re-located to a safer place after feasibility studies had been conducted at the new site. He said a new one had already been designed and would be constructed after the Cape Coast/Takoradi highway had been made a dual carriage. The Roads and Highways Director noted that when the first accident occurred last year, highways authorities decided to re-locate the toll booth from Beposo but it faced strong protest from the market women who sell at the place. He added that authorities would this time round not yield to any protest. Meanwhile, the Beposo police had confirmed the incident and had instituted investigations into the accident.Source: GNA
