The dismissed Director-General of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), William Ampem-Darko, has directly fingered GBC’s ex-board chairman, Prof. John Aheto as the mastermind behind his ousting. The accusation, though not out of the blue giving the level of antagonism between the two, confirms the turf war at the state-owned media, which some say has led to divided workers-front and militating against its development. Professor John Aheto has, in recent times, been making uncharitable comments of the National Media Commission (NMC) for allegedly protecting Mr Ampem-Darko, a man he accused of being corrupt and deserving to be sacked from GBC. Mr Ampem-Darko’s contract with the state broadcaster was terminated with immediate effect on Tuesday, months after he was asked to proceed on leave. The NMC has also given the same marching orders to Prof. Aheto to vacate his position as the chairman of the Board of Directors of GBC. See a copy of the letter that terminated Ampem-Darko. Though unperturbed by the turn of events, Mr Ampem-Darko told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Wednesday that Prof. Aheto has been moving from one state agency to the other with a bunch of false allegations against him. Mincing no words, he said he had known Prof. Aheto as a person who “does not speak the truth”. “The allegations are all false. As for Prof. Aheto… [with Ampem-Darko apparently restraining himself from whatever words he wanted to qualify Prof. Aheto said,] ...he doesn’t speak the truth.” “He (Prof. Aheto) has been the engineer behind the whole thing, peddling the lies that have pushed the National Media Commission to take such a decision [to terminate his contract].” Mr Ampem-Darko has challenged the NMC to institute a forensic audit of his tenure in office within two weeks to clear him or confirm the allegations leveled against him by Prof. Aheto or face legal action.
