The immediate past Board Chairman of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Professor John Aheto says the National Media Commission (NMC) relieved him of his post to satisfy the beleaguered former Director General of GBC, William Ampem-Darko.The Media Commission late last year directed Prof. John Aheto to step aside to allow investigations into allegations of malfeasance and corruption against Mr Ampem-Darko.Prof Aheto and Mr. Ampem-Darko were dismissed from their posts on Tuesday, March 15.On Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, Prof Aheto explained that “since October last year the board asked for legal interpretation of step aside; they didn’t give us an answer. They said we should go and interpret it ourselves".According to him, until 20th April, 2011 he still considers himself a member of the board of the public broadcaster whose tenure expires on April 20, 2011.Prof. Aheto noted that board members were very proud of themselves because they protected the national asset advised that the state broadcaster needs a solid leader and management team to rebuild the institution.He urged the government to implement the policy of restructuring of GBC which has been on the drawing board for ten years now.Prof. Aheto said he will only be at peace if “there will be follow up to find out what actually went wrong, who is involved, who should be blamed and to take the corrective action. A lot of money has been lost to the state and we need to recover that money”.He added that “We need to set examples and send signals to everybody that national asset is not an asset that anybody can go and take at will the way they want to”.Meanwhile Mr. William Ampem-Darko, has been relieved of his post as Director General of GBC after deliberation by the National Media Commission at a meeting over the recent problems at the state broadcaster.Story by: Adwoa Gyasiwaa/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana.
