Frustrated Ghanaians accused of vandalising properties of the Ghana Embassy in Libya are to be prosecuted, a deputy information minister has said.
According to Baba Jamal, the men nearly lynched embassy officials in Libya after violent demonstrations.
They were angry with embassy officials who they accused of being too slow in repatriating them to Ghana following deadly anti-government protests in the North African country.
They vented their spleen on the officials and in the process destroyed properties, including cars belonging to the Embassy, Jamal added.
The men were finally repatriated to Ghana but on arrival at the tarmac of the Kotoka International Airport they were arrested on Sunday with little time to jubilate their escape from a volatile situation in Libya.
The men were said to have been distributed to some of the police stations in the capital pending further investigations and prosecution.
But their families are unhappy about the situation. They accuse government of violating the rights of the returnees by keeping them beyond the 48 hours stipulated under the law.
Speaking to Joy News’ Seth Kwame Boateng some family members say their relatives must be brought before court or be released.
They describe as an inconvenience the daily visits from far places to the various police cells in Accra to provide food to the arrested persons.
But government says it has not trampled upon the rights of the rebel returnees.
Baba Jamal explained the police are still doing a thorough screening of the arrested persons.
He debunked claims that the arrested persons have been in police cells from Sunday, saying some of them were arrested on Tuesday.
He condemned the action by the Ghanaian demonstrators in Libya, accusing them of being insensitive.
He said in the mist of the crisis in Libya these men took the law into their own hands and destroyed Ghana’s properties in Libya.
They will be made to face the full rigours of the law, he emphasised.
