Preview: Kotoko aim to dent Hearts’ centenary

The weekend presents the biggest derby in Ghana football and it's the game everyone looks out for when the league programme is released. Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko will hog the headlines way into next week as both sides renew their rivalry at the Ohene Djan Stadium on Sunday. Their history and rivalry dominates the league campaign, overshadowing the giant strides made by some emerging sides. Both sides this season endured spells in the relegation bracket but were lifted from near obscurity by their Serbian trainers. Now, the two sets of coaches would square off as they lead their sides to claim the bragging rights and a push for top-four places. And that shows how they've failed by their own standards. A win for Hearts, playing at home would give them a sweet double over their rivals and at least something to cheer about in their centenary year but on the other hand, Kotoko always would savour victory, if the Phobians are the victims. Ironically, with as many as nine games remaining before kickoff for the weekend's match-day-22 matches, both Kotoko and Hearts are not among the frontrunners for the title. Though their duopoly over the Ghanaian title stands, the facts remain that other sides appear to have caught up with them. Berekum Chelsea maintain their impressive 13-point gap at the top but must be weary that a side who are 34 points adrift them at the bottom of the table can ruin their title run-in. The League leaders would travel to the Coronation Park to play B.A. Stars, who look all set to play in second tier league next season. Medeama SC, in second place would continue their chase for the title, which appears a distant dream with a home game against Heart of Lions at the Tarkwa T&A Park. After failing to get a result from Wa last weekend that saw them relinquish their top-four place, New Edubiase can mount another push to move up the standings when they welcome Ebusua Dwarfs to the Gyemfis Park. Still smarting from their defeat to Kotoko, Aduana Stars return to their favourite Dormaa Park to take on All Stars. Revitalised by their away win in Akosombo, King Faisal stand to make good progress if they can take all three points when they play Liberty Professionals, who need to overcome their derby blues at the Baba Yara Stadium. The never-ending relegation story would wrap up the fixture pile as Real Tamale United, first from bottom take on Mighty Jets, who are second from bottom at the Tamale Sports Stadium. Berekum Arsenals would enjoy a break this weekend after the Premier League Board rescheduled their match-day-22 fixture with AshantiGold to March 27. The game has been moved forward to allow AshantiGold's participation in the African Confederation's Cup this weekend. Source: Ghanafa.org
