President of the Friends of Rivers and Water Bodies group, Nana Dwumo Sarpong has blamed the various district assemblies of being responsible for the chronic shortage of water in the urban centres. Nana Dwomoh Sarpong said most water bodies in urban centers are being destroyed by human activities which have created serious water shortage in the cities. According to him, little is done by the assemblies to protect the river bodies as they watch people dump refuse and human waste in the water bodies. The environmentalist is advocating for a stringent law that will ensure that all water bodies in urban centres are protected. Nana Dwomoh Sarpong was speaking to Adom News in connection with the observation of the World Water Day, celebrated on the 22nd of March each year. The day is celebrated across the globe to increase people's awareness of water's importance in environment, agriculture, health and trade. Nana Dwumo Sarpong also attributed the recent cholera outbreak to water problems because a lot of people do not have access to potable drinking water for consumption. Nana Dwumo Sarpong also expressed his worry about the recent increase in the construction of boreholes in Accra. According to him, the city will sink if there should be a disaster. He has cautioned the government to provide pipe bone water instead of encouraging the construction of boreholes. In Ghana access to potable water is one of the major challenges facing residents in some parts of the country, especially those in the rural areas. Adom News has been following the water situation in some parts of the country. In Accra, areas like Tantra Hills, Dome, Kwabenya, Agboba and Ashongman estate all in the Ga West Municipality, are some of the places that face acute water shortage. However Tanker drivers who supply the residents of Ashongman Estate, Dome Kwabenya, Brekusu, Pokuase, Amasaman through to Sapeiman with water also complained of lack of water hydrants in the area.
