Some drinking water sellers are believed to be capitalising on the apparent public loss of confidence in the wholesomeness of sachet water, popularly called 'pure water', to defraud the people. They are refilling empty water bottles with sachet water and offering them for sale.Their action followed a research conducted by the Ghana Chemical Society which said 85 per cent of pure water produced in the country did not meet the required safety standards for the health of consumers.Survey conducted by The Times newspaper shows that many people have resorted to drinking bottled water because they believe that producers of bottled water meet the required standards. However, this is what some drinking water sellers seem to have taken advantage of.A member of the public who spoke to the Times on this development, said a check of these bottles, reveal that some have expiry dates which go as far back as 2009 and 2010.He said because many consumers are not keen to find out the manufacturing date of the water, some sellers seem to have a field-day in making undeserved profits. Some commuters at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle lorry station, also said they had been aware of the trend for over a year; hence, their decision not to patronise bottled water sold on the streets.Unlike the original bottled water which has a safety seal or joint at the opening, the refilled one opens easily and, has a peculiar smell and, in some cases, particles. They said the perpetrators of this act sometimes go to the extent of collecting empty bottles at social gatherings and refill them for sale to the public.A sachet water which , sells at GHp10 is almost of the same quantity as the 500 millilitre size bottled water which is sold for GHp70 while the larger size bottled water is sold forGH¢1.30.Source: Ghanaian Times/Ghana
