Five Ivorian nationals fleeing the chaos in their country to Takoradi in the Western Region have died in an accident this morning. The vehicle they were travelling in collided with a bus at a spot close to Agona Nkwanta. Eight others sustained serious injuries and have been rushed to various health facilities. Joy FM’s Western Regional correspondent, Kwaku Owusu-Peprah, said the accident occurred when the Hyundai Grace vehicle they were travelling in attempted unsuccessfully to overtake a long fleet of vehicles. In another development, averagely, an Ivorian crosses the border to Ghana every minute, Joy FM correspondent says. He said some Ivorians who enter the country in their own private vehicles and other means of transport would not want to be recognized as refugees, and are therefore pitching camps at places they consider suitable to them. Meanwhile, Ghanaian authorities are accommodating a large number of Ivorian refugees at the Apeye refugee camp in the Western Region. Reporting from the camp, Owusu-Preprah says the UNHCR has provided the about 1000 refugees with blanket, food and other relevant items to make life comfortable for them. Meanwhile, the camp is said to be situated in a flood-prone zone, necessitating the need for the National Disaster Management Organisation to prepared themselves for any eventuality.
