The Ghana AIDS Commission has disclosed that immediate measures have been taken to ensure that condoms are properly channeled and distributed at affordable prices to various regions in the country for easy access. Public Relations Officer of the Commission, Eric Pwadura gave the information to Adom News following reports from Atebubu that there are fears of a rise in the spread of HIV, as a result of an increase in prices of condoms. The HIV prevalence for Ghana in 2009, was at 1.9 percent, but records for 2010 which is expected in a few weeks, could go beyond the 2009 figure. Mr. Padwura asserted that the high prices of branded condoms is due to market forces which the Commission has no control over, but the certified ones distributed by the Commission are at very affordable prices. According to him, the Commission distributes WHO certified condoms through the Ministry of Health at very low prices. He claims that such unbranded condoms are sold at three pieces for Ghp10. “The condoms distributed by us are electronically tested and hermetically sealed and are as effective as any other brands on the market. We are implementing strategies to make distribution more effective,” he added. Mr. Padwura also disclosed that the Commission is working on eliminating the infection of HIV/AIDS through pregnancy by 2015. He reiterated the call for pregnant women to take their antenatal visits more seriously. He advised Ghanaians to help reduce the stigma rate and accept patients and also submit themselves to testing. “Preventing infections should not only be reduced to condom but also people should stick to one partner and test themselves often.” Mr. Pwadua advised. Meanwhile checks by Adom News in the regions indicated that the prices of condoms are relatively expensive. From the Central Region and parts of Enchi in the Western region, prices ranged from Ghc1.50p to Ghc10.00. Story by Maame Esi Nyamekye Thompson/Maame Adwoa Boison/Adom News
