The policeman who was shot in the eye at Akwamufie in a chieftaincy dispute last Friday is reported dead at the VRA Hospital at Akosombo.
The victim, Constable Prince Appiah, a driver at the Akosombo District Police Command, died on Saturday morning.
Twenty-two suspects, including six from Afwe Work Private Security Company at East Legon in Accra and the one who confessed to shooting the policeman, have been arrested and were being processed for court at the time of filing this story.
According to the acting Public Affairs Directorate, DSP Cephas Arthur, who made this known to the Daily Graphic in Accra, the brain behind the disturbances at Akwamufie, identified as Nana Okumahene, is, however, at large, and the police have mounted an intensive search for him.
He said information so far gathered by the police indicated that Nana Okumahene was the one who hired the private security men from Accra to Akwamufie to spearhead the demonstration against the newly installed chief known as Kwame Owaredu.
DSP Arthur indicated that the police personnel dispatched to the area to ensure peace and order were provoked to the point of returning fire but they I adopted a professional approach to control the situation and rather arrested the perpetrators.
He said the situation was calm at Akwamufie with the reinforcement of more police personnel from Accra and called on the factions to follow approved and laid down procedures to resolve their grievances.
A chieftaincy dispute at Akwamufie on Friday, March 25, 2011 led to the shooting of a policeman and stoning of another.
The incident occurred at about 1.30 pm on Friday, after some policemen were dispatched to the town to prevent a possible violent clash between the Yaa Ansah and the Yaa Botwe gates that have been engaged in a protracted chieftaincy dispute.
