A Circuit Court in Accra on Friday remanded into police custody a 20-year-old driver for allegedly snatching a taxi cab from a taxi driver at Sowutuom in Accra. Percy Aboagye, aka Nana Kwame, who was dressed neatly when he committed the offence, told the complainant that he went to church and was finding it difficult to get transport back to his residence at Sowutuom. The complainant offered to take him to his residence and on reaching an uncompleted church building in Sowutuom, he and his three accomplices pulled cutlasses and clubs and snatched the car from the complainant and drove it to Breman Asikuma in the Central Region. Aboagye was charged with conspiracy and robbery. The court did not take his plea. When the court asked Aboagye about his age, he claimed his was 17 years old. He, however, could not produce his birth certificate to confirm his real age but said he had a driver’s license. The court ordered the police to ascertain his age from his driver’s license. Meanwhile, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Reindolf Agyemang told the court that Aboagye informed the police that he was 20 years old adding that he (Aboagye) had a wife and a child. Aboagye told the court that his baby was three weeks old. ASP Agyeman told the court that at about 23:30 hours on March 14, the complainant, Mr Sylvester Kwame Fosu, a resident of Dansoman, Accra, was driving his Kia Sephia taxi cab along the Abeka Lapaz motorway. ASP Agyemang said when he reached a bus stop at Lapaz lorry station, Aboagye told him that he had closed from church and was finding it difficult to get a vehicle back home and asked the complainant to drive him to his house at Sowutuom for a fee. The prosecutor said that because the complainant realized that Aboagye was neatly dressed he agreed to assist him. ASP Agyemang said the complainant drove Aboagye to Sowutuom and when they reached an uncompleted church building, Aboagye asked him to stop. Aboagye then got out of the car and pulled out GH¢10 note from his pocket to pay the complainant. While the complainant was sorting out his money to give Aboagye his change, he (Aboagye) pulled the key from the ignition and three unidentified young men whose names were known as Frederick Amoakwah, aka Apoh, Yaw Nico and Peni, all at large, arrived at the scene with cutlasses and clubs. The accused person and his accomplices ordered the complainant to come out of the car and they drove it to Brema Asikumah in the Central Region where it was handed over to one Emmanuel, also now at large. The complainant lodged a complaint with the Police and intelligence gathered by the Police led to the retrieval of the complainant’s vehicle. During interrogation, Abaogye admitted the offence and mentioned his accomplices as Emmanuel, Amoakwah, Nico and Peni. Source: GNA
