The Western Regional Police Command has arrested an Ivorian combatant, Kouame Ahui, who entered the country with weapons, last week. Kouame, who carried a pistol and 48 rounds of ammunition, was arrested at Sefwi Wiawso and handed over to the National Security. The weapons have been confiscated. The Regional Police Commander, Ransford Moses Ninson, who disclosed this at a news conference in Sekondi, on Wednesday, said 55 other combatants, who were arrested in Brong-Ahafo region were disarmed and were last Sunday repatriated to Cote d’Ivoire, through the Elubo border. Mr. Ninson said the regional command had directed all police stations along the border in the Western Region to monitor and report the arrival of refugees through unapproved routes. He asked them to also screen suspected combatants who entered the country and disarmed those found with ammunition. He said that a 60-member police contingent was providing a 24-hour security at two camps at Elubo and Ampain for the over 3,500 Ivorian refugees who have fled the political unrest in Cote d'Ivoire. Mr. Ninson said the command had drawn up plans to monitor security at the borders to ensure that people did not infiltrate and create problems in the region. Crime officers were also on the ground to check those who visit hotels in the region, he said. "We are seriously monitoring the situation to ensure that they (Ivoirians) do not create problems in the region," he said. "I take this opportunity to appeal to the general public to draw my attention to any professional misconduct by police personnel and to provide information on criminals to enable us act decisively to maintain law and order."
