The Embassy of Japan and the Japanese community in Ghana will Saturday April 9, 2011 organize a charity event at the Accra Mall to raise funds to aid reconstruction efforts in Japan. The charity event dubbed “Accessory of “LOVE & SUPPORT” for Japan” will showcase some handmade bead accessories and other handicrafts made by some Japanese children here in Accra. On March 11, 2011 Japan was hit by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and a 33 foot tsunami which killed over 10,000 people with some 15,000 people still missing. Barely a month after the disaster, Japan an aftershock quake of 7.4 magnitude rocked Japan’s north-eastern coast again on Thursday April 7, 2011. Thursday’s aftershock prompted the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue a tsunami warning for a wave of up to 6 feet. Financial experts say Japan would need an estimated $300 billion to rebuild its battered economy. As a first step, the Japan Embassy and the Japanese community here in Ghana will over the next few weeks organise a series of events to raise funds to help rebuild their devastated country. The first of such events comes off tomorrow at the Accra Mall from 12 noon to 5pm. The event will include musical performances by some Japanese residents in Ghana. There would also be a display of some shea butter cosmetic products and a Japanese flag will be provided for the public to write their messages of support to the people of Japan. There will also be raffle draw with the tickets going for GH¢ 2. One Japanese student has already expressed his appreciation for the support Ghanaians have shown the Japanese community since the disaster struck nearly a month ago. The student said “I want to do what I can to support those victims. I am grateful that many of my friends here in Ghana are supportive and encouraging our activity and showed their love and support to those people in Japan.” Another charity event will be held at the pool side of the Mensvic Grand Hotel in East Legon on April 30, 2011 from 6pm to 10pm. The event will feature musical performances, magic and an auction show. All the funds raised from the charity events will be given to the Japan Red Cross to help with rescue efforts back home.
