Seventy-seven Ghanaians living in the troubled West African country of Cote d’Ivoire have arrived in Ghana in two canoes.
The returnees, including a week-old baby are believed to have spent five days on the sea before their safe arrival at the Takoradi Harbour, Monday.
They told Joy News’ Western Region Correspondent, Kweku Owusu Peprah that close to a million Ghanaians are still stranded in Zimbabwe, a fishing community in Ivory Coast and need urgent repatriation.
The returnees, mostly fishermen, say Zimbabwe is about the safest place in Ivory Coast following weeks of violent conflict between government forces led by embattled Laurent Gbagbo and UN backed Alassane Ouatarra.
They have called on the Ghana Navy to dispatch its boats to the area to bring the stranded Ghanaians back home.
The mother of the one week old baby recounted frightening scenes of gunshots to the reporter and warned rebels may soon move to what has now become a safe haven for Ghanaians - Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile the canoes that brought the Ghanaians to Ghana are expected to return to Ivory Coast.
