Residents of Ekumfi Obidan, a farming community in the Mfantseman West District of the Central Region have appealed to the government to speed up work on a water project which started last year to serve them with safe drinking water.
The community relies on distant streams and other sources for water for domestic purposes, which exposes them to water borne diseases.
The situation makes it difficult for them to carry out their daily activities since both adults and school children have to cover long distances in search of untreated water.
According to Mr Kwesi Attah, spokesperson for the community, one of the beneficiary villages at the end of the main pipeline of the ongoing water project is already enjoying potable water while Obidan, which is the nearest community and closest to the main pipeline is still relying on streams.
Mr Kwesi Attah said the situation becomes worst in the first quarter of every year due to the impact of the dry season which compels residents to spend productive hours searching for water.
The spokesman said the water problem and lack of teachers’ accommodation is making it difficult for teachers to stay in the village to teach and that is adversely affecting education.
He is therefore appealing to philanthropist groups and individuals to support an ongoing teachers’ accommodation project.
