Some New Patriotic Party (NPP) activists in the Obuasi Wawasi constituency are to be dragged to court to compel them to settle their indebtedness to the Micro-finance and Small Loans Centre, MASLOC.
The activists numbering about sixty took the loans in 2008 but reportedly refused to repay insisting that the money was a gift from their Member of Parliament (MP)for the area.
Their spokesperson, Michael Owusu, told Joy News their MP Edward Ennin ordered the release of the money to them as a reward for their votes.
He said if there is any repayment to be made, the MP should bear that responsibility.
But Edward Ennin, the MP for the area has denied ever telling the activists the money was a gift.
He said he only facilitated the process of acquiring the loans from MASLOC.
“I don’t work for MASLOC, I don’t work for the banks, [all] I did was to facilitate it, to make sure that they also get that facility; the MASLOC people themselves were in Obuasi to educate those whose names appeared on the list,” he said.
The MP said all the beneficiaries of the facility were made to sign agreement forms “so how can you just turnaround and say that you thought it was a gift.”
