GNA workers on strike

Workers of state owned wire service, the Ghana News Agency are on a sit down strike. They are protesting the return to office of the General Manager, Nana Appau Dua. The Board of the Agency last week asked Appau Dua to proceed on leave following agitations by workers over poor conditions of service. The workers accused the beleaguered boss of running down the agency with careless abandon, and heaved a sigh relief after he was asked to proceed on leave by the Board. But the National Media Commission- the body statutorily mandated to appoint and dismiss heads of state media organisations- has described the Board's action as an usurpation of its powers and therefore illegal. The NMC has subsequently asked him to return to post, which he did Monday morning. But the workers have kicked against his return and have decided to lay down their tools to register their protest. Philip Attuquaye Quaye, Secretary to the local workers union confirmed the strike in an interview with Joy News' Dzifa Bampoh. He said the workers can no longer work with a manager who is lacking the business acumen to run the agency. He feared the workers will be victimsed if Appau Dua is allowed to remain at post. He would not say when the strike will be called off except to warn that it might get worse if the NMC fails to take action timeously. He called on the NMC to appoint a new General Manager, and fast too if it has the interest of the agency at heart. Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
