The Ghana Police Service has revealed that, there has been a reduction in robbery cases in the first quarter of the year compared to same period last year. A total of 272 robbery incidents were recorded between January and March, 2011 as against 468 in 2010. 53 suspected robbers including 14 and 17 year olds were arrested in the first three months. These were revealed by the deputy Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department ACP Vincent Redeemer Dedzo at a press briefing in Accra. He however indicated there was a surge in robbery cases in the Brong Ahafo, Ashanti and Western regions, which he added could be due to measures put in place to counter the activities of the robbers in areas they used to operate. ACP Dedzo attributed the increase in robbery cases in the Brong Ahafo to influx of refugees from the western borders. According to him, some refugees could be part of new robbery incidents especially in the Brong Ahafo region since armed robberies seized for a while before surging upward in the midst of the refugees seeking refuge in Ghana. In a related development, the Director General of Police Operations, DCOP John Kudalor stated that, measures have been put in place by the Police Administration to ensure that, Ghanaians enjoy an incident free Easter. He added that, the Committee set to investigate the rampant road accidents that rocked the country has finished with its investigations and has submitted the report to President John Atta Mills. On the Fulani herdsmen and their involvement in some robbery incidents, DCOP Kudalor indicated that, because of ECOWAS convention on free movement, it has become difficult for the Police Service to take a decision to drive the Fulanis out of the country.
