An unbearable foul stench enveloped an Accra Circuit courtroom Tuesday during proceedings when Reindolf King Kumodzi, a 27-year-old accused person, defecated on himself.
The offensive smell caused all the people in the courtroom, including the trial judge, Eric Kyei Bafour, to hold their noses in order not to inhale the stench. People who were sitting near the door managed to rush out of the courtroom.
This dramatic scene took the Police and other officers of the court by surprise, so the judge adjourned the case and immediately Kumodzi was ushered out of the courtroom.
Kumodzi, a refuse collector, was in court to answer a charge of possession of narcotic drugs without lawful authority.
When his case was called, the accused, who by then had defecated into his trousers and was behaving abnormally, stood up, saluted the judge and attempted to walk straight to him, but he was prevented by a Police officer as the stench was too much for the judge to bear.
The judge, holding his nose, asked the investigator if the accused was normal, to which he responded that he was very sound.
The investigator explained that the first day Kumodzi was brought to court, he did not show any sign of abnormality because he even called him (investigator) to remove the handcuffs from his hand when he (accused) was entering the dock.
Kumodzi's abnormal behaviour stopped the court from taking his plea on the narcotic charge. Mr. Kyei Bafour then adjourned the case to May 11, 2011 with an order for him to be sent to the psychiatric hospital for examination.
According to the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Samuel Sarkwah, the accused person, on April 20, 2011, was arrested by a team of police and military officers who embarked on an operation at Tudu, around Accra Central, to clamp down on activities of drug peddlers, users and other criminals.
The prosecutor, narrating the facts, said the accused was arrested through the help of sniffing dogs. He had in his possession quantities of dried leaves in a bag.
Kumodzi, after his arrest, was sent to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters for investigations. The prosecutor said the accused was brought to court to be remanded in order for the police to complete their investigations.
Meanwhile, the exhibit has been sent to the Ghana Standards Board for analytical examination.
In a, related development, Omar Graham Mensah, said to be a journalist and Amartey Ocansey, a refuse collector, are in police custody for illegally possessing Indian hemp.
They were arrested by a team of police officers at a base at Tudu after the police found quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp in the room they were then sleeping.
According to the prosecutor, when they were cautioned, they denied ownership of the dried leaves.
However, in court, Ocansey pleaded guilty to the offence while Mensah, the journalist, pleaded not guilty. He informed the court that he was engaged to research on narcotic issues and therefore was doing his investigations when he was arrested by the police.
Mensah mentioned Kofi Bentum Quantson, former National Security coordinator, as one of the people he worked for. He added that he used to write stories for the Chronicle newspaper.
