The Ghana Grid Company (Gridco) has warned that it will soon begin a schedule-free load shedding exercise in the country.Officials of the company say they are undertaking the load shedding programme because of a supply deficit from the Volta River Authority. Gridco is however unable to specify areas to be affected by the latest load-shedding or at what times power supply will be cut.Explaining the circumstances that have necessitated the power cuts, head of Public Relations at Gridco, Albert Quainoo said “VRA is carrying out some planned works in Akosombo which normally will not affect supply to consumers but unfortunately they’ve had problems on some of the generating units in Takoradi and Tema and this has led to generating deficits.”Mr. Quainoo told Joy News if the challenge persists, Gridco will be forced to cut supply to consumers in areas that will assure stability for the transmission system and this he said could happen in any part of the country at any time.He said until the generating units come into service, load-shedding will be the only option available to the company.He revealed that the VRA has not given GRIDCO any timelines of when the generating units will begin full operation.Asked whether it is not a case of incompetence on the part of Gridco that has led to this situation, Mr Quainoo stated that the fault is not from their end as they are just a transmission channel and not the generator of power.Story by Derick Romeo Adogla/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
