Pupils in a community near Winneba are staying out of school because their school doesn’t have a place of convenience. The Sankor community of more than 2,000 people has only one public place of convenience. The school children are therefore forced to travel long distances to attend nature’s call at the seashore. The journey is so long that by the time they complete the return trip, they are too late for school. Nana Yaa Fynn-Thompson visited the community and reported that only five percent of households in the community have toilet facilities. A resident, Madam Ghartey said the situation was affecting progress in the community especially in the area of her children’s education. She said the only public toilet in the community has three seats for men and same for women and the pressure on it is simply unimaginable. Madam Ghartey said children have to defecate in polythene bags in the night because they cannot go to sea shore. She disposes of the waste only-God-knows-where. She appealed to the authorities to provide the community with additional toilet facilities. The Municipal Chief Executive for the Efutu Municipality, Nii Ephraim, shared the concerns of the residents of Sankor. He however said the best solution is for home owners to obey by-laws under which they are obliged to provide toilets in their houses. Source: Joy News/Ghana
