Policy think-tank, IMANI is warning government of dire socio-economic consequences if unregistered mobile phone SIM cards are disconnected at the end of the month.
The National Communications Authority has warned that after more than a year of registering SIM cards, those who fail to register will lose their numbers permanently from July 1st.
IMANI is organizing a forum in Accra on the issue and Joy News reporter Nana Adjei Essuman said speakers believed there were so many subscribers, especially those under 18 years, who did not have the required identity card to be able to register their SIMs.
A senior fellow at IMANI, Kofi Bentil, said the move by the National Communication Authority will cause “economic and social disruption” because many people depend on their mobile phones for their livelihoods.
Mr Bentil said government must think through the process to ensure the timing is right before the implementation.
Also at the forum was Lawyer Nii Ardey Clegg who believes the registration requirement is unconstitutional and will amount to breaching the contractual agreement between the service provider and subscribers.
