The Police is set to intensify a house-to-house policing strategy aimed at increasing security and to improve police-public relations. The strategy, known as community policing begun in 2003 but its impact has been negligible. On Tuesday, the Police Service with assistance from government and the British High Commission inaugurated the community police regional head quarters at the Tesano Police Station. The Vice-President, John Mahama in an address reiterated government’s pledge to provide manpower and logistics for the police service. According to him, the government will recruit 16,000 police personnel to augment the existing police force. To facilitate the work of the police, the Vice President said his government is on course to providing finger print and DNA data base to help the police analyse crime scenes and to ensure arrest of criminals. John Mahama promised to provide vehicles to make the police more mobile. The Inspector General of Police Paul Tawiah told Joy News the concept would be taken to the district level for effective crime fighting. “One of the ways you can serve the community better is to invite community participation and policing activities, policing strategies [etc],” he told Joy News Beatrice Adu. He said tents will be sent closer to the people and to awaken security consciousness for the people.
