Zoil Ghana Limited has revealed that its mandate to clean the country’s beaches is being severely hampered by the indiscriminate waste disposal. It has been almost two years since Zoil launched the Eco-Brigade project for cleaning the country’s beaches. But a number of beaches, particularly in Accra, are still used as places of convenience and refuse dump sites. The Accra Zone Coordinator for Zoil Ghana Limited Giwah Fatai told Joy News the situation is worrying. “Peaple normally dump [waste] into our river bodies and you know any time it rains, this water will carry all the waste that is in the rivers down to the beaches. Zoil has to come down here to clean.” He said the fishermen along the land beaches also contribute to the problem by defecating at the shores or leaving behind the unwanted nets which end up with all kinds of refuse. Mr. Fatai is therefore asking the unit assemblies to cooperate with them to keep the beaches clean. Source: Joy News/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
