The Ghana Maritime Authority has called for the replacement of wooden boats with fiber glass and ferries. This is expected to cut down the number of accidents on the Volta Lake. The call follows an accident at Pru which claimed the lives of 10 people. The accident was said to have been caused by strong winds which capsized the boat sinking it immediately. According to the Director General of the GMA, Mr. Peter Azumah, his office is discussing the possibility of acquiring fiber glass boats on hire purchase basis for the boat owners. Currently he said, interested companies have submitted prototypes to his office to aid the discussion. Additionally the Maritime Authority is in discussions with the boat owners, the Ministry of Transport and the District Assemblies to form co-oporative groups to acquire ferries on the lake. Already, six (6) naval posts have been erected to monitor the activities on the lake whiles the district task force officers are stationed along the lake to assist in the enforcement of the law. Mr. Azumah said since the implementation of the security code, accidents have been reduced adding that this latest accident occurred outside the security zone. Currently G.M.A has intensified education between now and November when the major rainy season begins in the northern sector. In addition to acquiring more safety jackets for maritime transport, the authority emphasized its commitment to ensure that international navigation rules are implemented.
