Police in the Brong Ahafo Region have warned they will be ruthless with trouble makers who attempt to disturb the peace before, during and after the NDC Congress at Sunyani.Over 1,000 armed security personnel from across the country have been deployed to maintain peace and order at the congress amidst assurances from party officials that the congress would be peaceful.Public Relations Officer at the Regional Command, Chief Inspector Christopher Tawiah, has told Nhyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah that body scanners and CCT cameras will be used to screen people at the Coronation Park venue of the congress.About 3,000 delegates are expected to vote at the congress on Saturday.Police say uniformed and plain-clothed personnel will be on high alert at vantage points in Sunyani.Chief Inspector Tawiah said the police will not be distracted by people who seek to foment trouble.Though police do not envisage any security breaches, the presence of heavy armoured vehicles at the Regional Police headquarters is very prominent.“We have water canons and other things that when you do, we will spray you with it”, Chief Inspector Tawiah said, assuring that residents should not be scared by the armoured vehicles.“We are not at war, but you know the Ghanaian system. People will confront police anyhow. The armoured car will not be there. They would be stand-by somewhere”.Chief Inspector Tawiah however warned against confrontations with the police, adding that the police will use force to quell any such confrontation.“My appeal to the general public is that, (they should not) confront or have (any) confrontation with police.
