Opposition NPP youth wing, the Young Patriots has slammed President John Mills for failing to rid the national capital of filth as he promised during 2008 elections. The group held a news conference on Tuesday and accused the president of doing almost nothing about the worsening filth in Accra. Richard Nyamah a spokesperson for the group cited the outbreak of cholera as one of the unfortunate repercussions of filth in the capital. “Accra is engulfed in filth, so that for the first time in the history of this country we have had over 4,000 people infected with cholera, some 60 of them have died; we don’t have a place to go and dump our filth any more. Meanwhile they have it in their manifesto that in 100 days they will clear the country of filth,” he said. But this position is not shared by Accra Mayor Alfred Vanderpuije who has been on a campaign to create a millennium city. For him, “Accra is now very clean and hawkers are no longer loitering on the streets”. Mr. Vanderpuije paid glowing tribute to the achievements chalked by the AMA in the city during his recent foreign trips with the Vice President John Mahama. “Today if you should come to the city of Accra it has never been as clean and more beautiful than it is to day. “Today Circle is a beautiful place to sit at night and enjoy the breeze of Accra,’ he noted. “…Today we have no hawkers on our streets in Accra as a result of that the coconut trees are growing so that we can have fresh air…” he touted" Source: Joy News/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
