The Police administration is accusing some transport owners of not taking the necessary security measures when travelling, especially at night.
According to the acting Director of the Police Public Relations DSP Cephas Arthur, some of the transport owners for selfish reasons have refused to reserve a single seat for a police man - for purposes of security - thinking rather about the money they will lose should that seat be given to the police.
“…There have been instances where we have met them, discussed the issue where they think that it is a bit expensive abandoning one seat to a police officer so that you lose that amount, that fee they would have taken from the passenger. That is how the typical Ghanaian approaches the issues of security,” he lamented in an interview with Joy News Seth Kwame Boateng.
DSP Arthur’s comment come after a weekend of trepidation in which four armed robbery cases were reported on the country’s highways with some fatalities.
In Nsuta, the driver of a Yutong bus was shot dead by armed robbers but a policeman aboard the bus is said to have returned fire, downing one of the robbers and foiling the attack in the process.
DSP Arthur believes should transport operators put in place adequate security measures, many of the reported armed robbery cases on the highways will be minimized.
He was however convinced the Police are on top of the war against armed robbery in the country.
He has subsequently asked Ghanaians to remain calm and be fully assured the police will maintain maximum security for the populace.
“From the stories that you have brought, the police have been on top. The Police have tried to foil all the attempts, except for the unfortunate incident where a driver of a Yutong bus was shot dead,” he said.
DSP Arthur warned the robbers not dare the police in a shoot-out because they will always be the vanquished.
“They (robbers) may want to dare but this is what we are telling them; that should they dare they will always go the vanquished,” he swore.
He said the police have been effective in the patrols despite the strangling logistical constraints they are facing, assuring, “the police are in control”.
He is hopeful government will honour its promise of augmenting the police with 700 vehicles to facilitate their movements.
“Our patrols are very effective," he said, but the “challenges we are having is that we have a little bit of logistical constraints and that is why the police is so happy that government has promised us 700 vehicles. I know that when they come and we augment our fleet with them we are going to be more effective and deliver to the expectation of Ghanaians.”
Until those vehicles come, he said, "we want to assure the general public that the police are in control."
