The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is calling for the setting up of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the recent allegations of bribery of journalists in the Upper East region by some government officials by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Deputy Information Minister Baba Jamal is purported to have been captured on tape recording in a secret meeting with a group of journalists in the Upper East region and promised them cars and cash if they would do the bidding of the government. Baba Jamal has challenged the allegations by the NPP has also threatened a legal suit if media houses who have attributed the voice on the tape to him do not retract the publication and apologise to him. The Upper East regional branch of the GJA has conducted an investigation into the allegation and has presented their report to the National Secretariat of the GJA. But the General Secretary of GJA, Bright Blewu has assured Ghanaians that the Association would not cover up any member who would be found culpable of involvement in alleged attempts by government to induce them with cars and cash to influence their work. He said even though the Upper East branch of the GJA has conducted an investigation, it is necessary for an independent body to also investigate the allegations. He said the GJA would not sweep anything under the carpet and would apply the necessary sanctions on any member found guilty. The GJA General Secretary called for the immediate promulgation of the broadcasting law to regulate activities of the media in the country. Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the Media Foundation of West Africa, Professor Kwame Karikari has urged the media to blacklist politicians who continue to use abusive words during public discourse. He said the media houses should put out strict rules to guide politicians or individuals on how to speak on air. Professor Karikari argued that if the public translate their disappointment of politicians into votes it may make some impact.
