Thousands of squatters at the Kumasi Race Course area are searching for places to lay their heads from tonight.
City authorities razed down structures they have been occupying for years.
The action follows several warnings which were ignored by the squatters.
The site has been earmarked for the Sun City Project. A project sanctioned by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II which is a multipurpose facility project consisting of hotels, hospitals executive houses etc.
Luv FM’s Elton John Brobbey described the incident as sad as the squatters looked on helplessly whilst the task force under the protection of the military and police turned their homes into rubbles.
Most traders expressed disappointment in the Ashanti Regional Minister for failing to prevail on the KMA to suspend today’s exercise.
The traders who presented a petition to Dr Kweku Agyemang-Mensah last Thursday were confident he would be able to secure an extension of the relocation deadline.
Many of them say they were taken by surprise when a team of armed policemen and soldiers stormed the site to begin the demolition.
An executive member of the Federation of Race Course Traders Association, Egya Ofori told Joy News more than 3,000 traders have lost stalls and structures that serve as their homes.
He said the traders could not afford 5,000 cedis for a store at the Abinchi market where they are being asked to relocate.
But the Public Relations Officer of the KMA, Godwin Nyame told Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoh on Top Story, his outfit had given enough notice before the demolition was undertaken.
He dismissed allegations that the cost of stalls and structures were overpriced.
He said his outfit is still operating an open door policy and is ready to assist aggrieved squatters to relocate.
