Nine persons, who allegedly stole assorted relief items, meant for distribution to victims of the recent floods at Bososo in the Fanteakwa District in the Eastern Region, have been arrested by the police.
The suspects were said to have gone to the distribution ground at Bososo and threatened to steal the items from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) officials at about 11:30.p.m.True to their words, the nine were said to have snatched the items made up of 15 mattresses, 100 pieces of polymats, 25 mini bags of beans and 100 plastic buckets and bowls each and fled the scene.The suspects are; Lariti, a former national treasurer of the defunct Eagle’s Party, Abraham Tetteh, Patience Narteh, Eric Tetteh, Frank Kweku, Francis Kwabena, Rita Ofori, Augustine Akoto and Lydia Acheampong.
The suspects, who have been granted police enquiry bail, are currently assisting in investigations.
Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Fanteakwa District Chief Executive, Mr Abass Fuseini Sbaab, said on Sunday at about 12 noon, he received reports from some of the NADMO officials that a group of angry youth had gone to a public durbar grounds; the distribution point at Bososo and seized some of the relief items.
He said he immediately rushed to Bososo where he met the angry persons who complained to him that though they were also affected by the recent floods; their names had not been included in the list of those registered to benefit from the items.
He said he advised the suspects to exercise restraint for the NADMO officials to first give out the relief items to the victims whose names had been written.“I assured the angry persons that all those affected by the floods, irrespective of whether their names had been registered or not, would get their share of the relief items,” he stated.“It therefore, came as a surprise to hear that those angry persons went ahead to carry out their intention to steal the relief items.
“The theft of the relief items, for me, is a premeditated intention by this group of person and we shall deal with them in accordance with the law,” Mr Sbaab added.
