Mr Kwesi Pratt, Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, is appalled by the audacity of some Ghanaians to dare accuse President John Mills of an offence as criminal as forgery.
According to him, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its sympathizers including its media outlets, have had the guts to accuse the President of forging a document just to defend himself in the alleged 'mansion' he has acquired for himself.
Following reports that President Mills has put up a new mansion close to his private residence off the Spintex road, the Director of Communications at the Presidency Koku Anyidoho produced copies of correspondence between the presidency and the estate developer after giving conflicting explanations on the issue.
But Editor of the Searchlight newspaper, which originally published the news, has stood his grounds on the matter, promising to release evidence to prove his case when the time is ripe.
Also there are reports of people, mainly opposition figures, raising concerns about the authenticity of the supposed letters. While some claim that President Mills was not in Accra on the date the letters were sent to the estate developer, others have raised issues with referencing and the letterhead.
Contributing to discussions on Alhaji & Alhaji, a current affairs programme on Radio Gold Saturday, Mr Kwesi Pratt stated that the NPP, recognising the President’s high sense of integrity, was feeding on the matter in a desperate attempt to attach corruption to his personality to dent his image.
He noted that after clear evidence had been produced indicating the President was innocent of the allegation, the NPP and its sympathizers have shifted their position, focusing on trivialities.
With respect to the unavailability of references on the said letters, Mr Pratt asked whether “We still need references in this computer age?”
He was amazed that a whole President could be accused of a criminal offence like forging a document, asking: “In which country can this happen...In America?”
If President Obama were accused in the manner in which Mills had been, investigations would be conducted for the truth to be established and those behind the unfounded allegations punished, he claimed.
An obviously disgusted Pratt was saddened at the manner in which some people were abusing freedom of speech under the nation’s democratic dispensation.
“Is this the democracy we fought for?”, he asked, adding: Is this the democracy for which many died, were jailed and shed their blood?
“I can’t believe I lost all my front teeth for this…”he remarked.
Labeling the NPP as dishonest, the editor stated that there were no similarities between ‘President Mills’ non-existent mansion’ and renovation works carried out in ex-President Kufuor’s house, insisting that unlike in Kufour’s case, Mills has acquired no ‘mansion’.
