The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Paul Quaye has ordered that six policemen who have been interdicted for allegedly extorting monies from motorists be handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department for criminal liability, according to the Acting Head of Public Relations Unit of the Ghana Police Service, DSP Cephas Arthur. The six were arrested Wednesday at Akwati junction on the Accra-Cape Coast road by a special taskforce from various departments of the Police Service tasked to weed out the ‘bad nuts’ and cleanse the image of the organisation. The culprits were said to be in possession of white envelopes containing driving documents of motorists who had flouted the law with monies hidden in them. Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Thursday, DSP Arthur said the culprits, upon instructions from the IGP, would be investigated by the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PIPS) as part of the internal processes of the service. As far as criminal prosecution was concerned, he noted that if adverse findings are made in reference to their conduct the officers would be prosecuted. The DSP acknowledged that prosecuting the six could be difficult since in an earlier incident, the culprits were not prosecuted because there was no complainant in the case. He was however confident that this case could he followed to a logical conclusion since it held much promise – the seized envelopes contained information and contacts of the motorists who are alleged to have committed the offenses. DSP Arthur called on motorists who plied the said route on Wednesday and were stopped by the police to assist in investigations. “The naming and shaming itself is also a way of instilling discipline into officers,” he insisted.
