Some registration officers of the National Identification Authority (NIA) in Ashanti are demanding immediate payment of their outstanding allowances or they will hit the streets.The officers of Zones Three and Four in the Ashanti Region have given authorities up to the 12th on September, 2011 to clear the arrears, adding their patience has ran out after waiting for more 17 months.Regional Acting Registration Officer, Asare Kusi Appiah, says the workers are frustrated by the response by authorities who often tell them they are not the only people government owes.Speaking to Luv News in an interview, he regretted while their colleagues of Zones One and Two had been paid, about two thousand officers in Zones Three and Four have no idea when their money will be paid.As part of its mandate to provide National Identification cards to Ghanaians and non-Ghanaian residents, the NIA recruited temporary registration officers across the country to register qualified persons.They were categorized into regional and district registration officers, district registration supervisors and their deputies, centre registration officers and assistants as well as mobile registration work station officers.Ashanti Region was divided into Kumasi, Offinso, Tepa-Mankranso and Nyinahini-Nkawie Zones. Officers began work in April 2010 and completed their work on 31st of May 2010.However contrary to assurances they will be paid immediately after the exercise, they have not been paid seventeen months on.Mr. Kusi–Appiah also says some landlords from whose houses electricity was tapped to power the work stations have not been compensated as promised by the NIA.According to him, this has created rift between the landlords and supervisors, with the landlords accusing supervisors of taking the money and keeping it for themselves.Mr Kusi Appiah says the affected officers who number more than two thousand are left with no option, but to let the public know their frustration through a protest march.
