President John Evans Atta Mills has admonished Ghanaians to be mindful of what they say and do in the run-up to the 2012 elections, in order not to derail the peaceful atmosphere in the country. Addressing a multitude of Muslim celebrants climaxing the month-long Eid ul-Fitr fasting and prayers at the Independence Square in Accra, Wednesday, the president reiterated the resolve of his government to ensure “free, fair and transparent” elections. “And I will urge each and every one of us to attempt to refrain from any acts which are likely to cause problems during the elections. We must all watch what we say and do because the word is a very potent force.” President Mills further implored all and sundry, as one people - irrespective of region or religion - to cherish the peace and stability being enjoyed in Ghana, because “it is the only country that we have”. He appealed to Moslems to remain holy even after the fasting period and refrain from any acts which are likely to cause problems during the elections. “This is a period that you have all been purified, therefore, a period where you have a clean sheet. And I want to appeal that we use this period for self assessment and for resolving to even improve upon our performance in past years.” President Mills also appealed to the national Hajj committee to work hard to avoid problems and challenges that confronted last year’s holy pilgrimage, pledging the government’s unflinching support to ensure a flawless Hajj. President Mills commended the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharabutu, for his immense role in ensuring peace in the country.
